Environmental Overview

TestingOur proven experience promotes effective environmental planning, management of potential risks, and remedial investigations to minimize today's problems and tomorrow's unknowns. GSAI is one of the few firms that performs and understands remediation design form the viewpoint of the designer/builder. GSAI's professional staff has extensive experience in the design, management, evaluation, and closure of a variety of facilities including wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, hazardous waste and waste-to-energy. GSAI performs air quality studies to evaluate the impact of emissions on workers and the surrounding area; waste minimization evaluations; and environmental compliance audits. Solid waste projects have included both municipal and hazardous waste facilities, and have involved design of new facilities as well as remedial design of hazardous waste site closures.

In addition, GSAI's professional staff has completed current condition evaluations of wastewater conduits, and is expert in the areas of pipe rehabilitation and inspection, pipe materials, coating and lining systems, trenchless methods, pipe jacking, microtunneling, horizontal drilling, and tunneling.

Site Investigations

GSAI has a solid reputation in the area of site investigation, remediation, and restoration. The integrated relationship between the environmental staff and Garry Struthers Construction, Inc. is an important factor in that reputation. GSAI has employed traditional and innovative methods for characterizing soil, as well as monitoring air, groundwater, and soil vapor. Its staff is expert in Superfund, RCRA, and the respective state requirements.

Services offered include:

Air Monitoring

GSAI has valuable experience conducting air monitoring on a variety of projects. Relevant project experience includes:

Soil Characterization

GSAI has designed and undertaken well over 1000 soil characterization projects. Our approaches have ranged from simple, direct source sampling to statistically determined locations and numbers of samples. GSAI has also used innovations like field screening to conduct investigations more efficiently. Expertise in chemistry and geology is the foundation for the company´s strength in this area.

Groundwater

GSAI has conducted groundwater monitoring for over a decade, for nearly every type of analysis. Our firm has designed monitoring systems, collected samples using low flow purging, inline filtration, in situ samplers, and other specialized techniques. GSAI is also well versed in the statistical and multivariate analysis of groundwater data for use in conceptual site models and risk assessments.

Soil Vapor

GSAI has monitored soil vapor from air sparging/soil vapor extraction systems for several years. The need for this monitoring continues to arise with concerns about vapor transport to basements from underground storage tanks.

Environmental Management

GSAI has a long and successful compliance auditing practice. One of our larger regional clients valued our services so much that we are now auditing their auditing program. In addition to assisting its clients in the following environmental requirements, GSAI looks for ways in which pollution prevention and waste minimization may enhance how business is conducted. GSAI has, in addition, audited the compliance of major airports in the region with existing air permits (Clean Air Act synthetic minor permits, stratospheric ozone depleting substances (ODS) requirements).

Our expertise includes the following:

GSAI serves a variety of clients in the establishment, maintenance and auditing of environmental compliance and ISO 14001 environmental management systems, as well as the design of databases and GIS.

Including the following services:

GSAI is self-certified in ISO 14000 environmental management systematics. The firm has also assisted several clients in conducting various aspects of EMS support, including pre-certification audits, and annual systems checks. GSAI has estimated the emissions from a rum refinery to assist it in preparing for upcoming regulations and ISO 14001 certification.

GIS for Environmental Management

GSAI has provided clients the option of using geographic information systems to organize and report large amounts of environmental data. GSAI has developed a nationwide system for an international client to use in tracking hazardous waste from cradle to grave. The firm is also supporting a large sewer project in organizing data on utilities and other features germane to the project.

Information

GSAI has been in the forefront of firms using databases and the Internet to the benefit of its clients. The firm has created innovative tracking systems that send messages through MS Outlook; digital, web-based warehouses of environmental documentation; and real time presentations of relevant information.

Real Estate

The acquisition and redevelopment of property in urban areas has given rise to the need for purchasers and sellers to conduct due diligence environmental assessments. These assessments, Phase I and II ESAs, transaction screens and hazardous materials surveys are undertaken in order to determine if a property has been impacted environmentally by current or past activities. GSAI has conducted literally hundreds of these assessments, most in connection with large-scale transportation or development projects. One of the ways in which GSAI provides additional value to its clients is through an unstinting attention to detail; both in the field, and in the review of records and data.

The real estate support services GSAI performs are:

ESA Phase I, II

The acquisition and redevelopment of property in urban areas has given rise to the need for purchasers and sellers to conduct due diligence environmental assessments. These assessments, Phase I and II ESAs, are undertaken in order to determine if a property has been impacted environmentally by current or past activities. GSAI has conducted literally hundreds of these assessments in the Pacific Northwest, most in connection with large-scale transportation or development projects. One of the ways in which GSAI provides additional value to its clients is through an unstinting attention to detail; both in the field, and in the records review process. GSAI understands that missing a fill pipe, or failing to notice that a property appears under two names, for example, may ultimately cost its clients significantly.

The site assessment services GSAI performs are:

Hazardous

Hazardous materials management is a complex issue for many of our clients because of the ubiquity of materials of concern, and the less than careful manner in which many people in the work place are accustomed to working with them. For example, it is common to see an oxidizer such as chlorine bleach stored next to a flammable material like a solvent, which represents a clear fire hazard. We are expert in the hazardous materials that can be found at facilities such as laboratories, print shops, paint shops, janitorial facilities, warehouses, and boiler and machine rooms. In particular, GSAI has a thorough understanding of storage, use and disposal of those materials.

Our projects include:

Underground Storage Tanks

GSAI has extensive experience decommissioning underground storage tanks (USTs). Our professionals have certification to remove and close UST sites throughout the Northwest. Over a five year period, GSAI conducted all of the UST closures for the City of Seattle´s Fire and Police Department facilities, as well as UST removals at DoD facilities in the Pacific Northwest for the US Army Corps of Engineers. In addition to removing USTs, GSAI has the engineering and construction capabilities to replace or install fueling systems.
